In January 2023 Cicerone Press, a specialist publisher of walking and cycling guides based in the Lake District, published my guide to walking in Ticino, the Italian-speaking Canton in Southern Switzerland.
This is a wonderful area of the Alps, with the lakeside resorts of Locarno and Lugano being the focal points in the south, with higher mountains to the north that are cut through by the famous St Gotthard Pass which links Ticino with Lucerne and northern Switzerland.
The book has details of 38 walks, from “extended strolls” of an hour or so along Lakes Maggiore and Lugano to much longer and more challenging walks in the mountain areas in the north, with the longest being a hike up to a mountain hut, the Capanna Cristallina, situated at an altitude of 2575m – close to the permanent snowline.
Each walk has detailed route directions and a map. In addition the book has sections on the region’s history, geology, wildlife, weather, public transport, cuisine, language and more besides, along with general advice about walking in the region.
Follow this link to see the entry for the book on Cicerone’s website, where you can also purchase copies.
The book has a number of photos. These are presented in the galleries below, along with many additional photos that could not be included in the book for reasons of space.
